Edison Glass: Time is Fiction

Edison Glass is a band that has been pushing the boundaries of indie and alt rock for a while. Grabbing what you think you know about what rock and hurling it out the window. The only excuse not to like this band is not hearing them before.

Coming from Coram, Long Island, New York, Edison Glass is using their widely diverse backgrounds and influences to bring creativity back into a scene in desperate need. The 4 members have been a band since 1998 but have been friends for most of their lives. What makes them so unique is the amount of creative musicality. What i mean is they use progressions and riffs that are heard in completely opposite of them and make them work. They use time signatures rarely used and vocal techniques not often heard and make something fresh. While the music sounds odd and complicated at first, there is still the sense of catchiness that grabs your ear and doesn't let it go.

This CD is one of my favorites and I'm so thankful for Nick Weil for showing me this band. Music listeners, grab this if you are tired of all the same pop rock bands of today. Musicians, pick up this CD and be inspired to make some new and unique. Bottom line, get this CD.

Decyfer Down: Crash

So today i will probably introduce a lot of you to band that many of you don't know. This is a band that has toured with Disciple, Skillet and many others. There is a good reason for that as well..... cause they awesome.

From the small city of Morehead City, North Carolina they go my attention from their first CD End of Gray. It was an gamble buy since I had never heard of them, but it payed off. What makes this band so awesome is 2 simple things. One, they are a no fancy or frill band that just lets their lyrics and instrumentation do all the work for them. They play simple rock with a deep sense of grounding and power. Second and most importantly for me, vocals. For me, Singer Caleb Oliver made End of Gray a must buy. From the power in his voice to his tone was like butter. Going into Crash, Caleb left the band for personal reasons and new singer T.J. Harris was brought in. If you don't know T.J, he was formerly in the band Fighting Instinct. I was worried hearing that because Fighting Instinct was more a southern rock band than a hard rock one. Then I heard the single Crash and all my worries were gone. Ladies and gentlemen, this singer for me is one of the best I've heard. He adds soul and depth with the power that seems effortless.

In conclusion, I love this band. If you give them a chance, you will love them too. Buy this album and pick up the End Of Gray album as well and heck the Fighting Instinct album as well. ha ha

House of Heroes: The End Is Not The End

Today we got a band that brings the past and the present together in a mega mix. Grabbing influences from what some call, "The Greatest band ever" and apply their modern edge to make House of Heroes.

From Columbus, Ohio these rockers have brought the influence of the Beatles to modern rock. Signed with Goatee Records, they have a lot of amazing label mates to keep up with. With former artist like Relient K and Family Force 5 and current artist like B. Rieth and Ayiesha Woods, there is a lot of pressure to keep up. Luckily, House of Heroes have their own unique sound that separate them from an already diverse line up. With this CD you can tell the band are huge Beatle fans and what makes them so fresh. You get a since of vintage sound wrapped in an alt rock package. The vocals and guitars bring a edgy sound, while the lyrics bring a storytelling and depth not seen a whole lot lately. With songs like Baby's a Red, In The Valley Of The Dying Sun, and Ghost bring a deep story and imagery of each situation. I think that's really cool.

So if your looking for a new band to put in your already full iPod's, then check out House of Heroes. They bring vintage classics and modern gems together. Also be on the lookout for their Cover CD of the Beatles coming out this year.

Jonezetta: Popularity

I'm excited and stoked to present to you, Jonezetta. Take it in, and enjoy. haha well today's album review is one of my new favorite bands and I got to tell you i really loved this CD. The vocals, the instrumentation, the feel makes me want to dance.

All the way from Clinton, Mississippi Jonezetta has made a name for themselves by fusing together dance and alt.rock. While it has been done before and it is nothing new, what Jonezetta brings is super-duper catchy songs that makes you want to dance. Most all the choruses in the songs, you can learn by the 2nd time around. What this does is get you involved in the songs and leave with a grin while singing their great hooks. With songs like Popularity, Backstabber, and Get Ready this CD doesn't ever give in and makes it perfect party CD. Vocalist Robert Chisolm, does a great job in making his vocals both difficult and accessible and his tone is spot on with the style.

Jonezetta is a band that in my oppion should be more popular than they are now(no pun intended). Whats more is the message of the CD to stop selfishness and the mindset of wanting to be popular. If you love dance music or not, you need to check out this band.

Eli's Album Review
Red Umbrella:Living and Surviving

Today i got a band that is so unique, so diverse, so awesome i can barely hold in my excitement. AHHHHHH!!!! hahaha anyways to be honest i didn't know what to say about this band at first but after listening to the CD a couple times two words come up, unique and catchy. Now to the review.

These pop rockers from Parry Sound, Ontario Canada bring a freshness of sound that breaks multiple barriers of music. You'll get some pop, rock, techno, and even hip hop in this CD. One thing is for sure is that though you may say, what kind of band are they, you'll leave remembering their songs. What is interesting is how the combine their sometimes weird synths and sounds, nothing ever feels out of place. This a sign that this band is having a lot fun making music and when you have fun doing it, you can make some awesome music. With songs like Prison side, Intervention and Boompop they will have you singing their songs all day and not really knowing why. I know why though, cause they are awesome.

Living and Surviving is one of those Cd's that can't be held in a single genre but instead fuses the best of each into a new sound that sticks out in the sea of sound alike bands. Being their second CD, i think this makes them a band that will do great things for the industry and the fact that they are God based makes it only better.

Sever Your Ties: Safety in the Sea

Hey guys this week i thought i would bring you a CD with more of an edge and grit, and Sever your Ties is the band to bring it. With high energy vocals and guitars, this band takes you on a trip and very rarely slows down.

Hailing from San Diego this group brings a mix of alt. rock and screamo that has been done but executes it with great poise. Signed with Solid State records, you know they bring the heat but whats makes them different is their mix in vocals. You'll sometimes ask yourself, is he screaming or singing? what this does is bring both audiences together and really opens up your idea of Solid State bands. I really got into this CD though was just that the CD never really lets up. the energy is always at 100% and its a good drive. With songs like Drifting, Things Are Better, and Voice like a Nova it became one of my favorite Cd's. The icing on the cake is the cover of Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper.

If you like hard rock but not really into the hardcore, this band will satisfy your cravings. if you do like hardcore then "Come On" its Solid State dude. hahaha anyways check out the CD and enjoy.

Sleep for Sleepers: The Clearing

So today after a long rest of doing reviews i thought I'd review a band that i recently got to meet and get to know. Before I get into the review, i just want to say these are some really cool guys and if you get a chance to talk to them, you'll know what i mean. Now to the review.

So Sleep for Sleepers is a band recently signed with Dreamt Music and come from the city of Whittier. Their sound is very catchy and everything from the drums to the guitars are in sync and thick. What makes a band for me is vocals and these are as good as any. Everything from the tone to the harmonies are spot on and its gonna be interesting how good they will be the longer and more they play. The CD with tracks like Thieves and Bones, The Fearless and Twilight bring the rock you want and the soft parts you crave. They are a good balance and at times remind me of bands like Mae and Mainstay. What really sticks out for me in this CD is the lyrics and meaning behind these songs. You can tell that real life experiences went into the songs and the vocals reflect that. Its always great to connect to songs with your own life and that was the case with me.
Overall i recommend this CD for any fans of the alt rock style and those who like the ambient passes as well. What crazy to see is how young these guys are and that if they stick together what they will be able to accomplish.

Secret and Whisper: Great White Whale

So today i wanted to do a band has caught my attention lately. Coming from Canada, this band is looking to be a mainstay in the Tooth and Nail label, and with their familiar yet unique sound they could prove to do it.

Their debut album Great White Whale is one that brings old and new sound to the table. This band combines such band influences such as Anberlin, Taking Back Sunday, and Mae it gives the feel of all the bands you love, but what makes them different? This band brings pure energy and rock while adding ambient, spacious motion. Their breakdowns and rhythm section bring a unity and dependency that is usually seen in harder rock. The vocal work is awesome done by Charles Furney. If you combine Stephen Chistian's (Anberlin) tone, and Aaron Gillespie's (Underoath) riffing and added on top of that a incredible vocal range on top and you have an amazing group on your hands.

So in conclusion, check out this band. If your not into hardcore bands but love their breakdowns and energy, this is your band. So go buy this album and be amazed.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Ent, director of the Battle of the Bands for NorCal Spirit here at broken yesterday May 11, 2009. Michael is the pastor of Hope Christian Fellowship in Novato and is in charge of gathering 24 bands to battle it out for a chance to go on to play at NorCal Spirit August 15, 2009 in Novato California. The winner will get a cash proze, recording time and be the opening band for Sanctus Real . So far there are 4 bands signed up but more are needed, if you are interested at a chance to go big time email Michael and send him a demo or a youtube video of your band. Even though this is Christian concert you dont have to be a "christian" band but your stuff has to be clean since it will a family event.

Eli's Album Review - Far-less: A Toast to Bad Taste

Eli's Album Review 5/10/09
A Toast to Bad Taste

Hey Guys its Eli again and it's time for another album review. This Week i got a special treat for you with one of the bands that surprised me. I bought this CD on iTunes a couple months back only knowing that they were with Tooth and Nail records and that it was an 16 track CD for abut 8 bucks. i said yes, good deal and let me tell you......Great Deal!!!!

These guys (and girl) are from Virginia and are currently signed with Tooth and Nail records and to me one of the most unique bands they have. Their sound is part modern rock, part 9o's alternative (smashing pumkins, Soundgarden), all awesome. With interludes with classical influences and guitars with alt influences and vocals with alt with pop influences. his band sticks out in the indie genre. With so many types of music your surrounded by wall of music but the utter catchiness of their sound gets them stuck in head for days.

With songs like A thin line, Devil without a clue, and So Glad this cd just gives and gives for days. I strongly recommend this cd if your looking for something new and fresh and if its still at the $8 price, pick it quick cause I'm excited for whats next for this amazing band.

Eli's Album Review - The Myraid : With Arrows, With Poise

Eli's Album Review 5/6/09
The Myraid : With Arrows, With Poise

Well guys its time for my review again and this time I'm bring you my review from The Myraid's With Arrows, With Poise.

Let me start by saying if you haven't heard of these, go put now and check them out. Especially if your a fan of bands like After Edmund, Mew, and RadioHead. They are an alt rock band from Seattle, Washington and their music spans from electronica to ambient soundscapes to pop melodies. What i love about this band is the uniqueness in sound and the utter amazzzzing clarity and solid vocal work done by lead singer Jemery Edwardson. Though there are seemily heavy layers of sounds, his voice is still clear and vibrant as a bell. The musicianship and time spent is definitely shown in there simple yet complex progressions and it pleases both study heavy musicians and basic listeners. The Cd is well done and the theme of the cd to me came down to priorities and viewing the time spent. With songs like You Waste Time Like a Grandfather Clock and Forget What You Came For, the theme of what have you done for God and how are you spending time are reflected in the cd. The Cd is also fun with a cover of the song Call Me made famous by Billy Idol and songs titled Polar Bears and Shark Fins and Throwing Punches.

Make sure you pick up this Cd!!!!

Thank you for reading and be ready Sunday for my next review.

Crooked X

Hey guys Tim from Broken FM here. I ran across this band in a magazine the other day and had to see them for myself. Crooked X has come out with their debut CD this past January and they are all under the age of 16. Now I sometimes fell old around here but these guys are almost half my age. :) As young as they are they have a sound that is best described as old school. It just a fun sound that you can just put on and rock out to. The video below is a great example of that rocking sound. It is a song called Nightmare. As I understand it they wrote this song when they were just 11 years old. You can also check out this band on the game Rock Band. Check it out and comment.

As I Lay Dying releases a brand new DVD package

A few years ago I saw As I Lay Dying play at a small club called Slim's in San Francisco. It is in a place like that where this band shines. They bring a brutal set that is punctuated by lead singer Tim Lambesis' stage presence that at 6'3" 201 pounds can best be described as imposing. Tim Lambesis is also known for another trademark that is also a major part of their live show. That would of course be his long black hair. It turns out that back in the early days he was shaved and didn't even see himself as a lead singer. In their new DVD "This is Who We Are", released on April 14th, the band gives an inside look at their formation and some insights on the faith and personalities of the members. This set is a 3 disk set that includes the behind the scenes documentary, a live performance with the current lineup and disk of music videos and many other bonus features. The DVD is currently #2 on the Billboard music video charts and may soon be occupying #1.

The new video for the song "I Never Wanted" off the album "An Ocean Between Us" will be debuting on Headbangersball.com April 30th and will be premiering on the show May 9th. More info on the premiere and some upcoming dates for the band can be found here. Below is a sneak preview of behind the scenes look at As I Lay Dying.

Superchick - One Girl Revolution

Keith called in this morning twice and the first time he requested I play One Girl Revolution by Superchick. This song blew my mind and I had to play again during the eight o'clock hour. It was sorta like the matrix when you finally wake up to reality and your mind has no way at first to process the new information. It probably did not help that I was sleep deprived and totally loopy from the lack of sleep in the first hour. Thanks to this song and my mug-o-coffee I managed to pull out of from crashing right on top of the sound board and on to the floor. Thanks Superchick. Click to hear One Girl Revolution.

MxPx - Secret Weapon - Mike this song's for you

Today on Broken.FM we had two requests, one from Mike who attends the JC working through his general education who requested a song by MXPX. He said he needed a song to wake up but did not say what so I picked one for him called "Secret Weapon". A great song with a great message and maybe they right song at the right time for Mike.

OK Go - Here It Goes Again

With 55 million hit on YouTube "OK Go - Here It Goes Again" deserves to be watched over and over again. The question is why didn't I think of using treadmills for my last music video? Well they did and got the hits to prove that it pays to be a little wacky every once in a while.

Scottish Bagpipe Revival Friday with Flatfoot 56 and their Amazing Grace Video

Today I don't know what came over me but during yesterdays show I got really excited about flatfoot 56. So today it turned into Scottish Bagpipe Revival Fridays and I played pretty much most of their songs from 7 to 9 this morning. I got some great  feedback last night from Keith and my wife and really helped me find my stride for today's show. I think Fridays is a good time to blow of some steam go hard core and feature individual bands and really get into it on the radio. Flatfoot 56 rocks and the bagpipes are a special touch that takes their music to another level. The music to "Knuckles Up" make you feel like you're a soccer hooligan in a bare knuckle scrap  at a local pub after your team lost the match. Good jobs guys.

The Pen Guy Show on Broken.FM

The Pen Guy Show on Broken.fm

Today I went on air for the first time ever from 7-8:30 am on Broken.fm and it was an amazing and exhilarating experience. Keith the station director was with me to help me through some of the technical stuff and we talked a little bit about the how broken.fm got started. We also had our first caller with a song request and I think we also had 2-3 more calls that I missed while I was on the phone. One of the main concerns for the month of March is raising 18,000 to keep the station going and here is the break down of what we need the money for:

$8,000 to finish up building the main station on 88.7,
$5,000 for tower rent for April and BMI and ASCAP fees due at the end of the month, and
$5,000 to pay back debt owed.

you can donate by Paypal on our site
I believe this will happen with the support of listeners like you.

Again today was a great first day and I look forward to being on air again tommorow

Brian "Head" Welch - I am Second - Video

Brian "Head" Welch's video "I am Second" is an amazing story about how Jesus helped him overcome his meth addiction right in the middle of his drug habit.

Flatfoot 56 - Now Recording

Chicago’s Celtic-punk outfit FLATFOOT 56 will enter Absolute Sound in Houston, Texas on February 1st to begin the recording process for their highly anticipated new album, due out later this year. The as-yet untitled full-length will arrive as the follow-up to the band’s critically lauded 2007 release, JUNGLE OF THE MIDWEST SEA. Johnny Rioux of Street Dogs will take the helm as the album’s producer and engineer.

The Fray - You Found Me -Video

The Fray
"You Found Me is a tough song for me," explained The Fray’s front man Isaac Slade from the band’s MySpace page. “It’s about the disappointment, the heartache, the let down that comes with life. Sometimes you're let down, sometimes you're the one who lets someone else down. It gets hard to know who you can trust, who you can count on. This song came out of a tough time, and I'm still right in the thick of it. There's some difficult circumstances my family and friends have been going through over the past year or so and can be overwhelming. It wears on me. It demands so much of my faith to keep believing, keep hoping in the unseen. Sometimes the tunnel has a light at the end, but usually they just look black as night. This song is about that feeling, and the hope that I still have, buried deep in my chest."
